Cepea: After Avian Flu Case, Chicken Meat Prices Plummet in Domestic Market

Two weeks after confirming a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) case in commercial birds in the municipality of Montenegro (RS), chicken protein prices have recorded significant drops in the domestic market, reflecting international embargoes and increased internal supply, according to a report from the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea), from Esalq/USP. Between May 21 and 28, frozen and chilled whole chicken prices in the wholesale market of Greater São Paulo fell 10.6% and 8.7%, respectively, being traded at an average of R$ 7.72/kg on Wednesday (28). Among the cuts, frozen drumet led the losses in the period, with a 9.8% retraction and average price of R$ 10.61/kg. Live chicken also suffered devaluation. In the São Paulo market, the animal's price dropped 3.9% between May 21 and 28, to R$ 6.10/kg, according to the average of regions monitored by Cepea.
