A shipment of cherries from Kyrgyzstan was rejected entry into Russia through Kazakhstan due to the discovery of two cases of infection by the quarantine pest Drosophila on the border with Kyrgyzstan in the Zhambyl region. Inspectors at the border identified the infection and imposed administrative fines for violations of phytosanitary requirements. All contaminated cherries were returned to Kyrgyzstan. Drosophila, or fruit flies, can cause significant crop damage.
