Since mid to late August, softseed pomegranates have been sold in China, with daily sales in Shanghai reaching over 20 tonnes, twice the amount from the same period last year. China is increasing the acreage for soft-seeded pomegranates, mainly produced in Huili, Sichuan, Dali, Yunnan, and Heiying, Henan provinces. The national pomegranate production area is projected to reach 400,000 mu (hectares) this year, up from 200,000 mu last year, largely due to the planting of soft-seeded pomegranates. The industry's history traces back to 1986 when Tunisia donated six seedlings to China. However, the variety faces challenges due to its low cold resistance.
