Hu Fengyi, a plant scientist at Yunnan University, has been pioneering the development of perennial rice varieties, which are more sustainable and labor-saving than traditional rice. These varieties, originating from Africa, can be harvested multiple times, show resistance to pests, and are more ecologically friendly due to reduced soil disturbance. Hu's team has developed three hybrid varieties that have gained popularity in China and its neighbors, and the technology is now being shared with African countries like Uganda, Malawi, Madagascar, and Burundi as part of the African Union Seeds and Biotechnology Program 2024-2025. In Uganda, a new variety has yielded significantly higher than conventional rice, with larger and longer grains, indicating the potential for increased food security and economic benefits in adopting regions.
