The Chinese news agency, Xinhua, has commended Egypt's initiatives to rebuild Sinai, with a focus on revitalizing olive cultivation in North Sinai, a global leader in table olive exports. However, olive production has significantly declined due to terrorist activities since the tenure of former President Mohamed Morsi, leading to the destruction of olive farms and mills. Before 2014, 35,000 feddans (14,700 hectares) were dedicated to olive cultivation, producing about 75 thousand tons of olives annually. However, this figure dropped to 10 thousand tons in 2021. In an effort to reignite the industry, the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation has unveiled a strategy to plant 100 million olive trees by 2022 by offering land to investors.
