Shanghai hairy crab, a luxury dish traditionally consumed by the Chinese upper class, is now more affordable and widely available in the Vietnamese market. The price has significantly dropped from millions of VND per kilogram to around 400,000 VND, making it as cheap as domestic meat or roe crabs. This surge in availability and affordability has led to an increase in demand, with some customers buying up to 2-3 kilograms at a time. Hairy crab is usually imported from Yangcheng Lake in China and is enjoyed for its sweet, non-fishy meat and the rich, duck egg yolk-like roe. It is consumed in various ways, including steaming and hot pot, and is believed to bring good luck when eaten neatly.
