COFCO International Launches New Barge Fleet for Cargo Transportation on the Danube River in Romania

COFCO International has launched a new fleet of barges in Romania for cargo transportation along the Danube River, consisting of four pushers and 29 barges, to strengthen its logistics network along the Danube and Black Sea. According to COFCO, each barge is capable of transporting over 1,000 tons of grain, such as corn, wheat, and barley, providing greater flexibility, efficiency, and control over cargo transportation. The new fleet directly connects nine of the company's river and inland elevators with its deep-water port terminal in Constanta. COFCO International stated that it annually transports over 2 million tons of grain by barge from Central European countries to Constanta. In recent years, the company noted that barge usage on the Danube has tripled due to the efficiency of river transport compared to road and rail transport, as well as regional infrastructure challenges that favor water logistics.
