In the past decade, unemployed educated youths in Narsingdi district, Bangladesh, have found success through the cultivation of Calombo Lemon in high land areas. This initiative, backed by the Department of Agriculture Extension, has led to the establishment of 50 new lemon orchards across four upazilas, covering 480 hectares. The district is on track to produce over 5,200 metric tons of lemon this year, with plans to export over 2,000 metric tons. The Calombo lemon tree requires high fallow lands and can yield 50-60 mounds of lemon per bigha. The cultivation has not only brought economic benefits but also created job opportunities, with each tree potentially employing two people for leaf plucking and maintenance. The lemon is valued for its unique taste and demand in both local and international markets, particularly in Europe and the Middle East.
