Competing with kilos: The Japanese favorite, cedar mushroom, has emerged

In the Feke district of Adana, forest villagers began heading to the woods with the morning call to prayer for the "Cedar (Tar) mushroom," which can reach up to one thousand lira per kilogram. Last year, due to drought, the cedar mushroom did not appear much, but with the recent rains, it has flourished again and is reported to be exported to Japan. In the Mansurlu and Konakkıran areas of Feke district, the cedar mushroom, which grows naturally on the roots of cedar trees, is a favorite of Japan and South Korea, finding buyers for between 500 TL and one thousand TL per kilogram, depending on size and quality. The cedar mushroom, which local residents call "white gold," has started to appear again this year with the rains.
