Vietnam's livestock and poultry industry, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City, has faced significant challenges from late 2022 into 2023, including a trade deficit in meat products, leading to the closure of hundreds of pork retail stores and a production downturn. The industry has been hit hard by a surge in meat imports, totaling nearly 400 thousand tons of pigs and over 350 thousand tons of poultry, exacerbating the competition with cheaper imported goods. Industry representatives call for state intervention and flexible regulations to protect domestic production against unfair competition and emphasize the importance of improving livestock farming productivity and establishing technical barriers to revitalize the sector. As of 2023, Vietnam's import turnover of livestock products reached 3.53 billion, highlighting the urgent need for strategic adjustments to ensure the sustainability of the domestic livestock industry.
