A study conducted in Hungary has found that corn distillers’ dried grains with soluble (DDGS), a by-product of bioethanol production, can replace up to 30% of soybean and wheat in the diet of European catfish (Silurus glanis) without affecting growth performance and nutrient utilization. The study, published in Aquaculture Reports, highlights that DDGS is a good source of energy, protein, amino acids, non-phytate phosphorus, and yeast protein and fat. The researchers note that the variation in composition among different processing plants and grains used poses a challenge. Despite less than 2% of the global DDGS supply being used in aquaculture feeds, the demand is expected to rise due to the expansion of the aquaculture industry.
