Costa Rica's melon exports and cultivation have seen a significant decline. According to Procomer, the value of melon exports fell by 19% in the first seven months of 2019 compared to the same period in 2015, and by 57% in 2021 compared to 2015. The melon acreage has also decreased from 5,566 hectares in 2015 to 3,394 hectares in 2020. The National Chamber of Growers and Exporters of Melon and Watermelon (Canapems) is considering strategies such as processing melons into value-added products and requesting Procomer's assistance in a promotion campaign in Europe that will highlight the quality and sustainable cultivation of Costa Rican melons.
