The Central Statistics Office (CSO) reports a rise in the number of cattle and sheep slaughtered in Ireland in 2022 compared to the previous year. Cattle slaughterings increased by 6.7%, with over 1.9 million cattle processed, and sheep slaughterings rose by 7.7%, with nearly 3.2 million sheep slaughtered. Conversely, the number of pigs slaughtered decreased by 1.5%. The Irish Farmers’ Association has called on the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to investigate the potential impact of Dawn Meats' proposed purchase of Kildare Chilling, a major sheep processing plant, on the cattle and sheep processing sector.
