Cultivation of plantain in Ecuador

According to data from the National Federation of Plantain Growers of Ecuador (Fenaprope), the plantain yield in the first half of 2021 in the South American country was 56,948,758 cartons, while the plantain production for potato chips amounted to 1,597,032 cartons. This year, however, during the same period, the production contracted by 50%. Still, the snack version is tapping into new markets in the United States and Africa. According to Marina Andrade, president of Fenaprope, five to six containers a week are exported from Ecuador to the United States and two are destined for Africa.
