(Danyang=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Hyeong-woo = North Chungcheong Province's Danyang County is embarking on the branding of its representative specialty, Danyang garlic.
The county announced on the 28th that it will invest 60 million won to push forward the "Research on improving the purity and quality of Danyang garlic seed (seed garlic)" next year.
Through this research, the plan is to establish a system that can maintain quality at over 95% and to set up management standards to prevent variety mixing.
This measure comes after a recent issue of reduced purity in the variety was observed, such as the discovery of different-looking specimens in some farms' cultivation areas during the cultivation of specialized farms for Danyang garlic seed production.
A parallel study will scientifically analyze the impact of the red soil "Terra Rossa (a red soil found in limestone areas)" geology on the taste, storage, and component characteristics of the garlic.
The intention is to secure evidence that can prove the superiority of Danyang garlic.
County Mayor Kim Mung-geun said, "Improving the quality of Danyang garlic will be an important turning point for the sustainable growth of Danyang agriculture" and "Through this research, we will prove its scientific superiority and cultivate it as a trusted premium agricultural product."
