Demand for sheep and goat meat exports but slaughters cannot be done

High demand for sheep and goat meat exists at this time in the EU market. According to the recent figures published by the Commission, in 2024 we had a reduction in slaughters in the EU by 4.9%, while in 2025 there is also a further reduction of 1%. Although there is a great demand in the EU for sheep and goat meat there is a serious problem in Greece because although there are animals available for slaughter they cannot be taken to the slaughterhouses. Plague measures have created major problems in slaughterhouses, many of which are located in Thessaly. As representatives of the sector state to AgroTypos, there was a meeting of bodies and the National Interprofessional Organization of the Meat and Livestock Sector (EDOTOKK) about the problem that exists in the slaughter of animals.
