Spain: Dip demand for leafy vegetables and cabbage after a good start

Plenty of leafy vegetables and cabbage varieties are being harvested again in Murcia and Eastern Spain. The quantities are consistent and sufficient to satisfy the European market. The supply is now even a bit too large, because demand has currently fallen back after a very good start. "The harvest started slower than last year because planting was done later due to the heat in August and September," says Domingo Llamas, chairman of Unexport. "Yields have not been very high so far because there has been a lack of cold weather and rain. Now temperatures are starting to drop, but some rain is still needed to get the sizing right," he adds. "Prices have been very good for lettuce since the start of the season, but now demand and prices are falling. They are even below the cultivation and packaging costs.
