In 2022, Romania experienced a significant decrease in the production of key crops such as wheat, maize, and sunseed, with the most notable decline in maize harvest at -44.7%. This decrease was attributed to adverse weather conditions and increased production costs. The country's wheat harvest fell by 18%, and sunseed production decreased by 27%. The reduction in local production coincides with an influx of cheaper Ukrainian grains into the EU market, which has caused price drops and challenges for local farmers. As a result, the European Commission has estimated that Polish, Romanian, Hungarian, Bulgarian, and Slovakian farmers have suffered a total loss of 417 million euros, and has announced compensation of 56.3 million euros for farmers in Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania, with more compensation expected.
