Thai consumers may no longer be able to afford high-grade Monthong durians due to high export prices, leading to the consumption of downgraded and leftover durian from exports. Over the past ten years, global durian exports have seen a significant increase of 48.3% from 521,028 tonnes in 2011 to 772,860 tonnes in 2020, with Thailand being the dominant exporter. The market is expected to grow further, with China being the largest importer. However, the quality of Thai durian for export is a concern, with concerns about the use of chemicals to accelerate the color of the fruit. There is optimism for the future of the Thai durian industry, with hopes that it could become a champion product, surpassing rice as Thailand's most valuable agricultural export.
