The European Union is currently facing a notable surge in pig carcass prices, which have risen to €218 per 100 kilos, 23% above the average of the past five years, due to a significant reduction in pork production and pig numbers. The EU's pork production has fallen by 6.7% in 2023, leading to a 7.3% decrease in pig numbers, the lowest in a decade, with all member states affected, especially Denmark which saw a 20% drop. This decline in production, coupled with a 20.2% decrease in pork exports to third countries, totaling 4.2 million tonnes, has brought EU's export volumes back to levels seen ten years ago. Despite these challenges, the EU continues to be a major player in the global pork market, even though its carcass prices are now higher than those of other leading exporters like the United States and Canada.
