Proposal to extend Ireland's regulations to all EU spirits

Updated Sep 27, 2023
Representatives from the Center for European Policy Network (a German-based think tank) have been involved in drafting a 13-page report to issue recommendations after Ireland introduced health warnings on alcoholic drinks. Unlike tobacco, which is the inspiration for the Irish regulations, the use of which provides no health benefits, the benefits of moderate wine consumption have been scientifically proven, no matter if critics don't like it. The situation is complex, but the answer is simple: this is the strategy that has clearly prevailed in the context of the activities of the Network of European Policy Centres. Indeed, on the question of how to deal with the impact of Irish regulations on the labeling of alcoholic beverages in the European Union, the Network's report proposes two options, of which only one remains essentially viable if we take the authors into account. “It is disingenuous to prevent Ireland from implementing its regulations by 2026, especially after the support of the European Commission. It is highly unlikely that a judge at the World Trade Organization or the European Court of Justice will object." From there, there is only one way: “To avoid personalization, the EU must now present a legislative proposal that extends Irish regulations across the entire internal market. This is the most logical path," argues the Network Report.
