The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has added three new agricultural systems to its Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) program. These systems, from Austria, Indonesia, and São Tomé and Príncipe, were added for their cultural and environmental significance. The GIAHS program, with 89 systems across 28 countries, aims to highlight agricultural practices that contribute to food security, sustainability, and cultural preservation. The new additions include Austria's sustainable carp pond farming system, Indonesia's salak agroforestry system, which optimizes water management and cultural heritage, and São Tomé and Príncipe's cocoa agroforestry system, which enhances food security and preserves biodiversity.
