A senior official, Samosorov, has highlighted a concerning trend in the detection of counterfeit cognacs, with up to 80.5% of producers being caught counterfeiting, excluding those never caught. Counterfeiting methods include using wrong raw materials, overstating aging, and adding non-typical substances. Despite efforts to combat this issue through technical regulation and the introduction of a new GOST for cognacs from 2023, the problem persists. The new GOST is designed to identify most counterfeit cognacs, but not all, as it only addresses about 30% of the issues. The Federal Customs Service has raised concerns about the accuracy of the quantitative indicators and their interpretation in the GOST.
