Georgia has seen a significant increase in the cultivation of the exotic fruit, feijoa, particularly in the region of Samegrelo, with the area under cultivation growing from 160 hectares in the 1940s to 360-400 hectares today. The fruit, known for its iodine content and high yield of 15-20 tons per hectare, is widely consumed in Georgia and is becoming increasingly popular in other regions. The demand for feijoa in the country is rising, and so is its export, with Ukraine being the main market in 2019. The country is also exploring the potential of organic feijoa cultivation and considering the benefits of transportable varieties for increased export to the EU. As of now, New Zealand is the main producer and exporter of feijoa.
