The 2021 Agricultural Census by Statistics Netherlands reveals significant changes in the Dutch farming sector. The average number of pigs per farm has doubled to 3,400, with the largest farms in Limburg and North Brabant housing 5,300 and 4,800 pigs respectively. Despite this, the overall pig population decreased by 4% to nearly 11.4 million. The cattle herd remained stable, but the number of dairy goats rose by 1% to 482,000, predominantly in North Brabant and Gelderland. The chicken stock also saw a 2% decrease, driven by a reduction in broilers. The average dairy cow farm in the Netherlands now occupies nearly half of the total agricultural land, with an increase in the number of dairy cows and cultivated land per farm over the past decade.
