In the last decade, tilapia production in Mexico has grown annually by an average of 3.1%, and consumption of tilapia has also increased. However, there is still a deficit as approximately 113,536 metric tons of tilapia must be imported to meet the demand. Mexico is the third largest producer of tilapia in Latin America and the ninth in the world, with 50% of the annual production coming from controlled aquaculture farms in Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, and Yucatan.
