Fluctuations in vegetable prices in Minas Gerais, Brazil

The Minas Gerais State Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (SEAPA) is conducting a weekly surveillance of the prices of the top ten vegetables sold at CeasaMinas, in Contagem, to evaluate the food supply situation, comprehend the supply and demand dynamics, and assess the market's performance. The study, which spans from August 26 to September 6, 2024, gathers data from the Ceasa-MG unit in Greater Belo Horizonte. The vegetables monitored include pumpkin, Italian zucchini, garlic, potato, onion, carrot, chayote, pepper, okra, and tomato. The price fluctuations are attributed to factors such as supply and demand, weather conditions, and production costs. Throughout the bi-weekly period, the prices of some vegetables like pumpkin, zucchini, chayote, okra, and tomatoes surged due to decreased supply and increased discards, while onions and carrots experienced a drop in prices due to reduced external demand and increased internal supply. Garlic, potatoes, and peppers were the only vegetables that showed stability in price during the observed period.
