In the early 1990s, the collapse of the northern Pacific cod industry led to the complete collapse of the cod-related industry in the Newfoundland region of Canada, threatening the sustainability of the local community. Subsequently, the seafood distribution company Unilever and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) established the MSC in London, UK, in 1997 to set sustainable fishing standards, and it has now become a global standard for sustainable fisheries, while in North America, Europe, and other major developed countries, MSC certification is becoming a non-tariff barrier. However, domestic seafood export companies are still hesitant about MSC certification.
