According to a report by Peru's "El Peruano" on the 17th, if the growth momentum of Peruvian blueberry exports continues, the total export volume is expected to exceed 400,000 tons by the end of the current production season in March next year. This significant progress is attributed to the collective efforts of blueberry producers nationwide, who have consolidated the position of "Peruvian Blue Gold" in major international markets, promoting sustainable development of the country's agriculture.
Official records show that during the current production season (May 2025 to March 2026), Peruvian blueberries have entered 38 international markets, with 83% being exported to the United States, the Netherlands, and China. Notably, China has become a strategic market for Peruvian blueberries due to its growing demand for large-diameter and high-end packaged blueberries.
Since this year, Peruvian blueberries have successfully entered the Bolivian and Indonesian markets. Additionally, with the strategic support of the National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA), Peru is continuously advancing the phytosanitary access procedures for blueberries in Vietnam, New Zealand, and Japan.
Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Vladimir Cuno, stated: "We will continue to promote development in the agricultural sector, implement large-scale irrigation projects, and intensify efforts to open up more markets. It is crucial to continuously create opportunities for Peruvian producers; it should be noted that with the diversification of exportable products, more small producers are participating in the agricultural export chain."
In less than 10 years, the area planted with blueberries in Peru has expanded from 2,000 hectares in 2016 to over 20,000 hectares certified this year. The main planting areas are in La Libertad (45%), Lambayeque (27%), and Ica (15%).
Currently, there are approximately 65 varieties of blueberries planted in Peru, with 80% of the blueberry production concentrated in the following 9 varieties: Ventura, Biloxi, Sekoia Pop, Rocío, Mágica, Atlasblue, Emerald, Rosita, and Sekoia Beauty.
It is reported that in the previous production season, Peru was the world's largest exporter of blueberries, accounting for 31% of the international market share, surpassing Chile, Spain, Morocco (each accounting for 8%), and the United States (accounting for 7%).
