In May, Ukrainian grain fields experienced satisfactory weather overall, but southern regions suffered damage to crops due to frost and drought, affecting winter wheat, peas, rapeseed, and barley. The damage was attributed to soil and air frost, which impacted fruit, vegetables, vineyards, and spring barley. The prolonged drought and frequent frosts led to significant damage to winter wheat crops in the south, with up to 40% of areas affected. Peas and winter barley were severely damaged or killed in the southern Kherson region. The unexpected downward revision of the 2025 grain crop forecast, reducing it by nearly 4% to 55.3 million metric tons, was announced by APK-Inform agriculture consultancy. The consultancy also forecasted a 7.3% decrease in the corn harvest, attributing the negative impact on spring crop development to strong and prolonged frosts, high temperatures, and rainfall deficits in April.
