The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) in India has approved the commercial release of the genetically modified (GM) mustard variety, Dhara Mustard Hybrid (DMH)-11, marking the first food crop to be approved for such release in the country. This approval aims to boost the country's edible oil productivity and self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on imports. The GM mustard variety is expected to offer higher yield, water and fertilizer efficiency, improved oil quality, and disease resistance. The decision has been welcomed by farmer organizations, signaling a positive step towards achieving food and nutritional security through biotechnological solutions in agriculture.
