In response to the spread of bluetongue type 3 (BTV-3) in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, Germany, an autogenous vaccine is now available for cattle, sheep, and goats. Announced by the Ministerium für Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz of North Rhine-Westphalia, this vaccine initiative targets the prevention of bluetongue starting this spring. The vaccine, developed from a virus isolate from a local farm, is an inactivated autovaccine produced under emergency permit for use in affected farms, with a particular focus on protecting vulnerable sheep herds. Available only through prescription by a company veterinarian, the vaccination is voluntary and does not affect trade restrictions on cattle farms.
