In 2023, Germany saw a less than 1% decrease in demand for meat, poultry, and cold cuts in the food retail trade, with a significant drop in pork consumption. Despite this, consumers paid an average of 6.5% more for these products, including meat substitutes. The decline in pork sales, which have been falling for over a decade, was particularly notable at 6.6%. While beef and meat substitute sales also fell, mixed ground beef and pork meat, and poultry saw an increase. The Agricultural Market Information Society (AMI) attributes these changes to evolving consumption habits and a sharp rise in prices.
