The only remaining coastal herring paddock in Europe, located near the German town of Kappeln on the Baltic Sea, is being renovated. The paddock, which has existed for over 600 years, is a symbol of the city and will have stakes made from South African eucalyptus, which can last two to three times longer than local timber. The project, which aims to replace 800 piles at a cost of around half a million euros, is primarily funded by the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein and the European Union.
