The Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) Ghana Chapter has endorsed the new genetically modified Songotra T Cowpea as safe for human consumption, livestock, and the environment. This cowpea variety is resistant to the Maruca pod borer, an insect that causes up to 80% of cowpea crop losses, reducing the need for pesticides. The release of this biotech crop is expected to bring significant economic benefits and encourage the adoption of biotechnology solutions in Ghana. The food safety authority has ensured that the cowpea variety is clearly labeled for consumer transparency and safety.
