The government of Bangladesh is planning to include mustard oil among the essential commodities to be sold at subsidized prices to 10 million low-income families through the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB). This move is expected to save around Tk10,000 crore in foreign currency annually. The Ministry of Agriculture is working towards achieving self-sufficiency in edible oil production and reducing import dependency by 40%, with the current production surpassing the target for the current financial year. The Ministry is also focusing on ensuring fair prices for farmers and implementing the work plan effectively. However, the sale of edible oil by the TCB is facing challenges due to insufficient stock compared to demand.
