The Indian government has lifted the ban on onion exports, which was in place since March 31, 2023, and imposed a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 550 per tonne. This decision, made during the Lok Sabha elections, replaces the 40% duty that was imposed the previous night. The decision to ban exports was initially made due to a decrease in onion production in major Indian states. The government had allowed export of 99,150 tonnes of onions to six neighboring countries before the ban.
