The Deputy Attorney General of Uganda, Jackson Kafuuzi, has responded to a petition by the Uganda Sugar Manufacturers Association to block the licensing of new millers. Kafuuzi stated that the Ministry of Trade is better equipped to address the legality of the new licenses and the concerns outlined in the Sugar Act of 2020. He also announced plans to amend the law to introduce a Sugar Council, which will handle licensing under the supervision of the trade minister, in order to address concerns about the Council's independence and financing.
