The food price index of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) increased by 17.1 percent in March compared to the previous month, so much did the world market price of wheat, corn and vegetable oils jump as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war. According to data from the previous three years, the wheat exports of the two warring Eastern European countries together accounted for about 50 percent of the world's wheat exports: 30 percent for Russia and 20 percent for Ukraine. North Africa is the world's main wheat importing region. Within the region, Egypt tops the ranking list, followed by Algeria and Morocco.
