The article highlights the missed potential of Peru's legume industry, as identified by Jorge Fernández Gil, president of the Beans Committee and the Association of Exporters (ADEX). Speaking at the National Legumes Day seminar, he pointed out the need for increased public-private collaboration to boost the industry's competitiveness. He called on the State to improve training for producers on pesticide use and ensure harvest safety. On the other hand, he urged companies to add more value and diversify their offerings to reach more markets. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of meeting quality and safety standards to recover from a -3% drop in exports in 2023, which amounted to US$ 135,377,000. He also underscored the nutritional benefits of underconsumed Peruvian legumes like the pigeon bean and suggested more promotion to improve their consumption rates, especially among the vulnerable population.
