Guadalajara and Huelva: two new hotspots for avian flu in poultry

The veterinary authorities of the Junta de Castilla-La Mancha have reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, type H5N1, in a breeding chicken farm located in the municipality of Pozo de Guadalajara, in this province. For their part, the authorities in Andalusia have confirmed the presence of a second outbreak in Huelva. This brings the total number of outbreaks detected in domestic birds in Spain this season to five. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the outbreak in Guadalajara was recorded in a breeding farm of selected birds with an approximate population of 37,300 birds. The most likely route of introduction of the virus into the farm is considered to have been through indirect contact with wild birds, given the epidemiological situation of recent weeks.
