(Jinju=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Jeong-hoon = Gyeongnam Rural Development Administration announced on the 11th that it has completed the application for variety protection for a new mushroom variety, 'Saene.'
The Rural Development Administration bred the 'Saene' by fusing oyster mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms.
The name of the mushroom is derived from 'Sae' of the oyster mushroom and 'Ne' of the shiitake mushroom.
The Rural Development Administration explained that the 'Saene' is genetically closer to shiitake mushrooms while its texture and shape are similar to oyster mushrooms.
The cultivation period is about 10 days, which is shorter than that of oyster mushrooms (about 18 days) and slightly longer than that of shiitake mushrooms (8 to 9 days), and it is expected to help reduce production costs and improve work efficiency for mushroom farmers.
