The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has finally allowed the importation of Guatemalan Hass avocados, opening up a new market for the Central American country. However, additional steps are required before exports can commence. In 2022, Guatemala exported 10.8 metric tons of avocados worth $11.7 million. The USDA anticipates that Guatemala's initial exports to the U.S. could reach around 1,700 metric tons, valued at approximately $14.5 million, and potential annual production could exceed 15,000 metric tons by 2030, generating around $45 million in value and creating more job opportunities. The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala has been working closely with the Association of Avocado Producers (ANAGUACATE) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) to ensure compliance with sanitary and phytosanitary requirements, promote water conservation, and prevent deforestation in avocado-growing regions. The U.S. government also supports small farmers in Guatemala to improve the quality of their products and access high-value markets through Agricultural Value Chain Projects funded by USAID.
