(Changwon=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Sun-kyung = Changwon City in Gyeongnam announced that it will impose a complete entry ban on the Junam Reservoir area starting from the 21st, following the confirmation of a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) at the reservoir.
According to the city, the Gyeongnam Wildlife Protection Association rescued a mallard duck showing symptoms of neck tilting and inability to stand or fly at the lotus pond in Junam Reservoir on the past Sunday, the 9th.
The next day, when an association official arrived at the office, the mallard duck was found dead.
The city requested a detailed AI test for the mallard duck, and the result confirmed it as highly pathogenic AI (H5N1) on the same day.
For a detailed AI test on birds, the sample must be sent to the National Wildlife Disease Management Center in Gwangju, but due to an administrative error, it was sent to Incheon and then returned to Gwangju, causing a delay in the test.
The city explained that no additional birds with unusual symptoms were found at Junam Reservoir during this period.
The city plans to deploy on-site monitors at key points of the Junam Reservoir to prevent the spread of AI by blocking people's entry for the time being.
Junam Reservoir Division Chief Seo Young-hyuk urged cooperation with the entry ban at Junam Reservoir, saying, "We will do our best to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic AI to livestock farms."
