Spain's hazelnut production is projected to drop by 40% in the 2024-2025 campaign, reaching 4,100 tonnes, which would be one of the lowest harvests in history. This decrease is primarily due to severe drought conditions during the first half of 2024, which have destroyed crops and endangered plantations. The drought has led to significant irrigation restrictions, particularly in areas irrigated by the Riudecanyes reservoir. The Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Catalonia (FCAC) shares these concerns and is discussing the situation with other European hazelnut-producing countries and Turkey at a recent EU meeting.
