In 2019, Peru continued to lead as the largest producer of pelagic-based fishmeal and fish oil, while China remained the biggest importer of fishmeal. Norway held the top spot as the largest importer of fish oil. The aquaculture sector consumed the majority of both fishmeal and fish oil globally. The IFFO anticipates an increase in the use of fishmeal in pig and poultry feed and pet food in 2020. Asia, particularly China, was responsible for nearly 70% of global fishmeal production in 2019. The consumption of fishmeal and fish oil in aquaculture varied by species, with crustaceans and freshwater species being the highest consumers. The consumption of fish oil in aquaculture was predominantly in Europe due to its large salmonids farming industry.
