Peru: In 46 collections of genebanks, crops from the country are preserved

More than 14,500 identified samples of crops, breeding and microorganisms are conserved in 46 collections of germplasm banks (for genetic conservation) of the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA), in order to investigate and develop new technologies that improve the quality of agricultural production in Peru. These germplasm banks, located in 17 regions of the country, have 280 species of crops and their wild relatives. This genetic wealth is preserved through conservation methods and processes that guarantee its protection and viability. The accessions (identified samples) are registered in the Genetic Resources Information System (SIRGE) of the INIA, and are permanently evaluated through research focused on characterization, agronomic, chemical and genetic evaluation.
