Panama's Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) is taking measures to control two outbreaks of paralytic bovine rabies in the provinces of Coclé and Veraguas. The outbreaks were reported in Natá, Villarreal township and Toabré in Coclé, and in Calobre and Santiago in Veraguas. Following confirmation of the disease in affected herds, all animals within a 10-kilometer radius were vaccinated, and a sanitary fence was implemented to prevent the spread of cattle. Rabies is a fatal virus that affects the central nervous system of warm-blooded animals, typically transmitted by bats. MIDA conducts campaigns to capture bats and vaccinates personnel involved in these efforts. Vaccination is key in controlling rabies, and MIDA urges producers to ensure their animals are vaccinated and to report any symptoms immediately.
