Romania and Bulgaria, key EU sunflower seed producers, have seen significant drops in yield due to drought, with sunflower yield falling by 16.2% in Bulgaria and 32.5% in Romania compared to the previous year. Maize yields have also been impacted, with Bulgaria's yield down by 22.5% and Romania's down by 22%. The heat has led to increased aflatoxins in corn, affecting traders and potentially halting sales to demanding destinations like Malta. The region's sunflower oil content is lower, and the total supply has decreased by approximately 10-15%. Despite these challenges, both countries have recorded record harvests of wheat and barley, with about 70-75% of wheat having flour milling quality. This makes the region a potential reliable exporter of flour wheat, especially with low production and quality in the western EU.
