In the current season, Algeria imports a record 8.6 million tons of wheat

According to USDA's FAS forecast, Algeria will import a record 8.6 million tons of wheat in 2023/24 amid a deficit in domestic production and stable consumer demand. In the 2022/23 FY, wheat imports to Algeria amounted to 8.141 million tons, and in the next season it may decrease to 8 million tons thanks to the increase in domestic wheat production from 2.7 to 3 million tons. In the current season, the Russian Federation entered the list of main suppliers of wheat to Algeria, displacing the European Union from the leading positions. At the end of 2020, Algeria increased the permitted content of bug-damaged grain from 0.2% to 0.5%, opening its market to wheat from the Black Sea region.
